John Smiths Raceday Preview

Mon, Aug 4, 2014

Brighton Racecourse stages the first day of their three-day Festival of Racing on Wednesday, with the first of seven races due off at 14.20. The feature race of the day, the John Smith's Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy, has attracted a field of 13 runners, 5 of whom are previous course winners including the George Baker-trained Secular Society, who won at the track on his most recent start last month and George Margarson's Sword of the Lord, who completed a double at the track last October.

However, there will be great interest in Desert Society, who represents the powerful Hannon/Hughes partnership and may go well fitted with first-time blinkers, despite a disappointing performance last time out. Another significant runner will be Mark Johnston's Skytrain, who finished a strong third last time out at Glorious Goodwood, and may appreciate the drop in class.

The EBF/Laines Maiden Stakes has attracted runners from top trainers Luca Cumani, Roger Varian and Richard Hannon, whose filly Crafty Choice was bought for 70,000guineas at the Tattersalls October Sale last year.

Some of the entries in the 5 furlong Hills Prospects Nursery Handicap for two-year-olds include It's Lady Mary, an Exceed and Excel filly trained by Paul Cole, who ran a nice race at Lingfield Park last month and takes her chance under Jim Crowley.

Gates open at 12noon and tickets are available from £15 if booked by 3pm on Tuesday available on or 01273 603580.
