What's happening at Brighton

John Smiths Brighton Mile - most prestigious race of the season

Tue, Aug 5, 2014

The action moves from the panamas and champagne of Glorious Goodwood to the relaxed feel of Brighton's three day summer racing festival that starts on Wednesday. Always a popular destination and the John Smith's racing team are all packing our swimming gear for the trip to the seaside and the John Smith's Raceday that starts the festival. The first official race was run at this unique track in 1783 and the racecourse soon became a firm favourite of King George IV and friends. In slightly more recent times, the course featured in Graham Greene's 1938 murder thriller Brighton Rock.

The John Smith's Brighton Mile, is the feature race on Wednesday and the highlight of their racing calendar. Last year's race attracted a strong field of 15 and was won by a narrow margin by the Mark Johnston-trained Party Royal.

There are 5 course winners in this year's ultra-competitive field and Mark Johnston again needs to be the starting point after another successful Goodwood. Skytrain came back to form to run an excellent 3rd at Goodwood and has won off higher marks in the past. Desert Society won at Brighton last October and has run in some decent class races since for trainer Richard Hannon, Rapid Advance represents Sir Michael Stoute and Good Luck Charm takes his chance for local trainer Gary Moore.

Racegoers can look forward to a Best Dressed competition on Thursday and then the Brighton Bullet over 5f on Friday - look out for Top Cop if taking up his entry in that.

We can't wait to get down to the South Coast and three great days of racing and fun. The John Smith's Brighton Mile looks as tricky as ever, so whether you jump onto the Skytrain with us or pick another, enjoy the race with a pint of John Smith's Extra Smooth. Be lucky!
