A £5 million investment programme has transformed the facilities at Brighton since the management of the course was taken over by Northern Racing in 1998, and we haven't finished yet! Expect to see a similar amount spent over the next 5 years.
The first project carried out in the winter of 1998/1999 saw the renovation of twelve corporate hospitality suites and the Owners and Trainers Bar.
A new £100,000 Parade Ring was also built to provide superb viewing of the horses before and after every race. During this project £500,000 was spent on essential safety repairs to the main Grandstand terracing including new crush barriers.
The Silks Restaurant has been renovated and can now cater for 130 people on a race day and also has a separate bar over looking the Parade Ring.
Money has also been spent on the Racecourse itself. A £40,000 track watering system was installed prior to the start of the 1998 season to combat any threat of firm ground. A new trackside road was laid to ensure emergency vehicles remain off the course during a race.
During the winter of 1999/2000 the second major phase of redevelopment saw the entire renovation of the ground floor of the main Grandstand. New bars, food outlets, seating areas, toilets, Tote and Ladbrokes betting outlets (in both enclosures) and a new Tote Credit shop were built.
The Members Bar has the additional feature of a giant screen to view the racing.
As well as providing modern facilities on racedays, the improvements have created two multi-functional halls ideal for exhibitions, weddings, banqueting, trade fairs and conferences.
Further completed improvements include the demolition of the former Silver Ring Grandstand to create a marquee site and the addition of a picnic site next to the course.
During the winter of 2002/2003 a further £2.5 million was spent painting the back of the Grandstand, improving the signage around the course, extending the Owners and Trainers bar and refurbishing the two big function suites, the Premier Restaurant and the Prince Regent Suite.
The West Pier Suite has been updated and will be open as a public bar at every meeting under the new name of the West Pier Suite.
Northern Racing have modernised their naming of racing enclosures to make things more user friendly. The Tattersalls Enclosure (and bar) has been renamed the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure and the Members Enclosure (and bar, restaurant etc) has been renamed the Premier Enclosure.
The 2005 season saw the opening of a row of seven brand new hospitality suites at the very top of the grandstand. These will offer exceptional viewing over the track, the South Downs, the Marina and the English Channel.
During the 2006 season we will be starting a project to upgrade the main kitchen. This project will enable us to service our rapidly expanding conference & banqueting business and will allow us to comfortably cater events for up to 1000 people.
