Festival Of Racing Countdown - Course Specialist Uncle Dick

25 July 2025

One of the highlights of the 2024 Brighton Festival was Uncle Dick’s victory in the Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy. It was his seventh course win, and amazingly they were all achieved within the space of twelve months. Even more astonishing, given that record, was that he was sent off at 28/1.

Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton said afterwards, "He's an absolute legend. He's won for all my apprentices either this year or last and just loves it at Brighton, he's just a different horse there.”

Five of Uncle Dick’s seven wins were apprentice-ridden. He gave Oliver Carmichael, who rode him at the Festival, his very first win a month earlier when the youngster was having just his ninth ride.

Like many other Brighton specialists, he likes to be held up before coming with a storming late run on the outside. All those wins have been over a mile.

Uncle Dick was bought as a yearling for just £600 in 2019. He’d only won once before last summer, when he first ran at Brighton. He’s made up for lost time with a vengeance and could be a contender for win number eight at the forthcoming Brighton Festival which starts on Wednesday 6th August and runs until Friday 8th August.
